I can not express how excited I am to be starting this adventure to bring Orpheus and Eurdice to the historic quarry of the Vermont Marble Company and in collaboration with the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center.
A little history...
You may wonder how we came up with this crazy idea to produce something (other than marble) in the quarry.
For years we have talked about and dreamed about producing a festival in Vermont. Some days it is something like Charleston's Spoleto Festival of the Northeast and some days it is a little company that can bring music, theater, dance, and design together in unusual places. Still we hadn't quite found the place in which to create the project.
We first heard of the Carving Studio at Art in the Park in 2012. We stopped at their tent, where my son took to chipping away at a piece of marble with such intensity, that I didn't think he would let me leave. When he finally let us go it was only with the promise that we would go to the actual studio, which we did. We were warmly greeted and as we looked around we realized what an amazing resource we had right in our back yard.
It wasn't until Sculptfest 2014, that it all came together. There were several installations in the quarries and as we looked at the beauty of the stone and heard the acoustics, it hit us "Here! here is where we will create something". The next question was what...
