My favorite thing about putting on a show is watching a production grow from the kernel of an idea into full realization. Of all the things about theater, I think this is what keeps me coming back. We have an idea, a place, or a piece that inspires us to create anew. By telling that story, we somehow delve deeper into our own story and hopefully inspire our audience to do the same.
My other favorite thing is juggling all of the moving parts that comes with putting together a performance. Before I was an agent and aspiring general director, I was a stage manager. Hands down my favorite job ever. And the best time? Tech week. There are so many moving parts, so much that could go wrong, and it is your job to keep it on track, whether it be a sick singer or juggling orchestra and chorus breaks so you don't go into overtime. (Note: The fastest way to shorten your career as a stage manager is to go into orchestra overtime.) With Orpheus there has been more than a fair amount of juggling in the past few weeks. For a variety of reasons, we have moved from the quarry in West Rutland and to the Marble Museum in Proctor. Our production team came to Vermont this week to choose from two possible sites and the Museum. They immediately fell in love with an 8000 square foot abandoned manufacturing space underneath the museum. I have to say it is a pretty amazing space and I can't wait for Scenic Designer Liliana Duque Pineiro to put forward her design ideas in the next few months. We will have confirmed dates and some photos of the space soon, so keep an eye out for them. -Quincy
